Exploration/Adventure open world game

Role: Systems & Physics Programmer
Timeline & Team: 3 months, 7-person multi-disciplinary development team
Engine & Platform: Unreal Engine 5, PC

A narrative exploration game inspired by "La Vie de Joseph Roulin" by Pierre Michon, Vincent Van Gogh and games like The Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. You play as Joseph Roulin, a postman on his final day of work, with the freedom to explore the world, deliver letters, speak and interact with dynamic characters and environment elements.

Winner of "Excellence in Art" Rookie Division (Busan Indie Connect Festival 2025)

What I worked on

Gameplay & Systems:

  • Bike controller and physics: Programmed a custom vehicle bike physics controller using Unreal Engine 5's Chaos Vehicle movement, handling responsive character animations and Inverse Kinematics (IK) logic.
  • Modular Cinematic System: Implemented a system handler for Level Sequences and cinematic camera transitions, with modular tool for easy integration by the Artists.
  • Runtime profiling and optimisation: Profiled and optimised runtime performance, managing level triangle-count and lighting/shader complexity budgets, LODs, culling, and overdraw.

Internal Tools:

  • Timeline-based world lighting and material tool: Developed a modular tool using timelines and UE5 global material parameter collections to dynamically control post-processing properties across a day cycle.
  • World bound creation tool: Created an in-Editor tool utilising splines and UE5 draw spline to dynamically create world boundaries and collision zones.
